Why „DemoGoethe“?

1-on-1 coaching is the safest bet to reach your goals in Germany, no question. And yet, I personally believe making the transition into a new country more manageable requires a little bit more than just the right language counseling. It needs a welcome with open arms, a network of people, a community, right? This is why I named my approach the „δῆμος“ approach, from the ancient Classic’s way of wording community, nation, kindred spirits. Let`s find that feeling of community while you work on your language goals, together! Learning a language should never just be about a checklist or a scorecard. That is why since 2018, I give my German language learners and entrepreneurs more chances to gain confidence. Chances to feel heard and seen, outside of the classroom. A space where making mistakes is fine, where coping with everyday life suddenly feels a whole lot easier. For anyone familiar with the idea of a local Sprachcafé, it’s basically that! This kind of confidence-building Sprachcafé is special, however. The collective experience that expats, South Asians in Germany for example, have in common, means that we never ever run out of topics! Again, „δῆμος“ is that thing that makes you feel so much more relevant than you thought you were, so please remember: a casual and habitual chit-chat can make a real difference. Bring your cup of coffee to the next Sprachcafé session! While in 2018 I was simply teaching German as far as I was concerned, and thought of it as wanting maximum speaking time for my students in extra-curricular activity, this thing called „δῆμος“ took shape organically. Not only for the idea of finding a reassuring safe space, but also for having an arena for discussion where speaking skill naturally forms and flourishes. It’s about gaining more understanding of the necessities of expat life, it’s about building bridges. Similar to what the Goethe Institute does on a much grander scale worldwide, I chose our most famous poet, Goethe, to communicate the strength of the idea of building bridges. Himself a staunch defender of borderless identity-formation and ideas like the „world citizen“ (Weltbürger), Goethe had become something of a spiritual patron of my expat support approach. Over the years working as a German coach, I have seen a beautiful, much-needed development emerge first-hand: more and more government and NGO attention goes to students and expats shared between South Asia and Germany. I can say with great confidence that this work will shape our future and the future for Germany as a place to live also. My programme, as opposed to the Goethe Institute’s, replaces the global picture with the smallest possible aperture: tiny windows into everyday expat life, where the learners are the ones who dictate their own growth and shape their personalized needs. Born is the name „DemoGoethe“ or „DG“ for short. Representing everything me and my small community of learners stand for. Bring people together, learn from each other, and see how your newly found confidence in the language turns into empowerment in everyday life!
